Wilderness Connection, Inc is located
15 miles north of Gardiner, MT in scenic Cinnabar Basin. Our base of
operations is located on the historic Stermitz Ranch. The historic Stermitz
Ranch is owned by Rob's parents, Jim and Lorayne Stermitz. The ranch,
the oldest in Cinnabar Basin, was "squatted on" by Bob Dixon
in 1883. Dixon raised cattle which he trailed to Bozeman for market,
often returning broke and without a grubstake after enjoying the bright
lights of the city.
Joseph Stermitz, Rob's great-grandfather, immigrated in 1892 to mine
coal in Cokedale and Aldridge, Montana. In 1900 he purchased the ranch
from Bob Dixon and formally took up homesteader's rights. Over the years
he expanded the ranch and developed it into a viable cattle operation.
Located only 4 miles from the border
of Yellowstone National Park, our area abounds with game. The area has
an abundant population of elk (Yellowstone's northern herd population
ranges from 12,000 to 20,000 elk), deer, bear, mountain goats, and sheep.
